Make a celebration color card

Choose a few colors from the invitation or setting and arrange paper swatches together. Compare them in the room where the cake will be displayed. Record the intended look without assuming a printed color predicts a food coloring result.

Keep the finished note with its date and source material. Return to it when you repeat the exercise, and add what changed rather than replacing the earlier observation.
